Proof that AJAX isn't just a passing fancy

Someone has had (since 1999) a patent with some similarity to AJAX behavior
and is now claiming multitudes of deep-pocket corporations are 'infringing'
upon that patent by using 'AJAX'. (And, not coincidentally, they are in the
process of auctioning off the rights to that patent)

So we can safely assume that AJAX is important and a viable long-term
technology, because some clowns in suits have begun setting up a means to
fleece the people who developed AJAX and made it useful.

The modern-day secret to a successful patent seems to be waiting long enough
for hard-working people to develop sufficiently-advanced open source
software that has some similarity to an abstract concept you patented, so
that you can use that to essentially blackmail the people for big bucks.

Imagine if Da Vinci had patented the 'Mona Lisa' and his descendants filed
suit against every major painter of portraits who dared to pick up a
paintbrush since that time.
