For those of you who did the obvious--move the myql driver jar into .../common/lib--but to no avail, try the following: download the 3.0 version of the mysql jdbc driver and put it in common/lib and see what happens. It worked for me, so I tentatively conclude that:

MySQL JDBC Driver 3.1 is Incompatible with Tomcat 5.5
