I am building a php page with search form and result grid. When user input some word in the search field and hit the search button. I need to be able to manipulate the input keyword such as remove some common word before use it as a parameter into my select statement. What events should be use for preprocessing?

I think you can use the 'On Click' event for the search button
and then select the 'Retrieve Value for Variable' action.

You could use the search form's on validate event to manipulate the field before the form gets posted, or you could use the before build select event on the results grid to do the same thing.
