How do I compare a variable, input from a form to see if the database already contains it?

Need more details but I assume that you are looking for unique values? CCS allows you to set each field to unique (no coding required)
If this is not what you want, in the form validate, you can do an action that does a dlookup (selects a value from the db) and store that in a variable to compare.
