I want the option to be able to publish to a server in a secure manner, for example, using scp or sftp. Publishing via ftp is horribly insecure.

This was implemented. Will be available in upcoming 2.3 update, probably within couple weeks.

Great! You might want to integrate with PuTTY as tools like WinSCP do. WinSCP takes advantage of PuTTY saved sessions and the underlying ssh infrastructure so it does not attempt to reinvent the wheel.

Hmm, but I wrote that it is already implemented. If now we would need to change it and integrate with something else then this would seem to me like trying to reinvent the wheel.
Just my 2 cents. Actually any improvements could be good but it may be best for users to see it first before trying to improve it

What about DAV? scp is the safest way to transmit, but implies creating
a system user on the remote server; on the other hand, DAV is less safe,
but everything is restricted to the webserver area...

Not sure about the key management. I suspect that the key is automatically accepted.
We're looking into WebDav, but I am not sure if as an alternative to FTP, or for source control & versioning, or for both.

Hum... so the key are generated before each session? is the server
pubkey stored somewhere? would a server pubkey change be detected? and
does it mean I cannot provide my own key?

Well, a simple ftp-like server deposit would be cool for a start ;)
Thanks

The feature just isn't ready for prime time. If I can't specify my key then we have to have a way to show a login form or challenge dialog. Right now my web host just times out.
