I have been involved in a lot of tech discussion groups. Wouldn't it be way
more convenient if everyone were to use the email list as opposed to having
to log into the news server?

I know that this is just personal preference, but I personally hate mailing
lists, and would much prefer to log on to these newsgroups for stuff like
this..

I agree.
I like mailing lists, I just have a folder and an incoming mail filter
for each one in my mail client, and when I need to find an old message I can
just do a search on that folder. People who don't use folders and filters
might feel differently. But having both a mailing list and a newsgroup seems
a little redundant.
Seth.
