Has anyone tried to use the:

employee directory, taks manager, portal, registration for, forum, or store...

as a starting point for their application?

I spent some time trying to modify one but it was a real hassle...
The style sheets caused a lot a grief on IE...

Anyone try to do anything like this ?

I used the store as the basis of a more complex cart. As it built the original code was all replaced gradually but it was a good place to start since I never build a cart from scratch before. As I learned more it keep growing in features until it was an entirely original project. It is not the main income producer for my business with 28 yearly and 150 seasonal employees in the tourism industry.
The solution examples are good starting points unless one has a lot of experience so they can design it as a complete system from the beginning.
